Frequently Asked Questions

Is orthodontic treatment painful?

Whilst contemporary orthodontic treatment aims to minimise discomfort, it is normal to experience some temporary discomfort for the few days after the braces or aligners have been started and following an adjustment of the braces or a change of aligner. This is temporary and is effectively managed by:

  • Over-the-counter pain-relieving medication, such as paracetamol.
  • Orthodontic wax.
  • Topical anaesthetic gel from the chemist.
  • Soft foods.
  • Gentle oral hygiene and cleaning of the braces, teeth, and gums

Emergencies

Occasionally things happen to braces or aligners during orthodontic treatment. They may require a call or an unforeseen emergency visit to the orthodontist.
