Orthodontic Surgery

What is orthodontic surgery?

Orthodontic surgery, called jaw surgery or orthognathic surgery, is surgery to correct the alignment of the jaws. Misalignment problems of the jaws make it difficult bite, chew, and speak. Corrective jaw surgery is recommended to align the jaws, bite, and teeth for optimal dental and facial aesthetics, function and symmetry.

Corrective jaw surgery is usually combined with orthodontic treatment and is recommended for problems that cannot be fixed by orthodontics alone. Combined orthodontic and jaw surgery treatment is planned by the orthodontist and oral or maxillofacial surgeon. Orthodontic treatment usually commences prior to the jaw surgery and continues before, during, and after jaw surgery to optimise the alignment of the teeth, jaws, bite, and face.

Who needs orthodontic surgery?

Patients requiring orthodontic surgery have jaws that are misaligned due to various conditions, such as growth discrepancies, affecting their dental and facial aesthetics and function. If you have difficulty biting, eating, speaking you may benefit from orthodontic surgery treatment.
