Retainers

What are orthodontic retainers?

Orthodontic retainers keep your teeth in the correct positions after the completion of the orthodontic treatment and the orthodontic appliances (braces or clear aligners) have been removed. Retainers can be fixed to the teeth or removable, and frequently a combination of both are used.

Orthodontic retainers prevent unwanted tooth movement following orthodontic treatment and are maintained for at least 1 – 2 years after orthodontic treatment.

Retainers should fit comfortably and firmly on the teeth and should be worn as instructed.

Practically everybody requires retainers after orthodontic treatment!

How should I care for my retainers?

How to care for your retainers:

  1. Regular cleaning everyday.
    • Use a toothbrush and neutral detergent, such as handwash (not toothpastes that are abrasive or harsh chemicals that can damage the retainers), to clean your retainers in lukewarm water.
    • Avoid using harsh chemicals, such as bleach, that can damage the retainers.
  2. Retainer cleaning tablets and solutions from the pharmacy as indicated.
  3. Careful removal and placement – be gentle and try to use both hands when removing the retainers and when placing the retainers on the teeth.
  4. Safe storage – use the retainer box provided.
  5. Regular recall and check-up appointments.
